I grew up in a family of atheists. We were a very moral but practical family. We liked evidence and common sense.
I, however, wondered about all the believers in the world. What did they know that we did not? I grew up thinking that religion was a just a world view, and that people had belief simply because their parents had it, and their parents had it, and so on.
You've heard the story about the ham with the ends cut off? A newly married man watched his wife prepare a ham for baking. To his surprise, she cut the ends off before putting it into the oven.
He asked her why she did that, and she said that it was how her mother always prepared a ham for baking. He suggested they call her mother to find out why she did this.
The mother said she did it that way because her mothe always did it. So they called the grandmother and asked why she always cut the ends of the ham off before baking it.
"That's because my baking dish was too short!" she replied.
This was my view of religion and belief. People believed because they always believed, the same way some people still believe that being outside in cold weather causes a cold, and that hot water freezes faster than cold water. (It freezes at a faster rate, but cold water wins.)
But I was curious.
I dabbled in Methodism, Catholicism, Paganism, Buddhism, and ultimately landed on Judaism for a variety of reasons.
But it wasn't until I reconceptualized my notion of "God" that my spiritual side began to open up to me.
